Can two blue-eyed people have a brown-eyed child?
I know it’s possible for two brown eyed people to have a blue-eyed child, but I seem to remember from college biology that it’s not possible for two blue-eyed people (true blue, not green) to produce a brown-eyed child. Am I correct?
Well, I’m just as confused now as I was before.
It depends. If the dominant gene is blue in both of the parents’ families, then it is possible. This is very rare. Assuming the dominant gene is blue eyes in both families, there is a one in two chance for each parent to be heterozygous, or carry the recessive trait as well. If that is true, then there is also a one in two chance for each parent to pass down the recessive allotrope. The only way for a child to have a recessive trait is to have both recessive allotropes. Therefore, if by some rarity the dominant gene in both the parents’ families is blue eyes, then there is a 1 in 16 chance that the child will have brown eyes.
