Contour Fleece
cloth diapering–any tips for a first timer??

i’m bent on cloth diapering, have about a dozen fleece contours (med i think), half dozen small fitteds, half dozen thick fleece doublers, 2 dozen thin fleece liners, one med cover, 2 small covers, 3 one-size pockets, 1 small pocket…

i *think* i’m going to like the Bum Genius one size pocket diapers the best but that will depend on how they end up fitting!

anyhow, i know i need to get more, but do i have enough to start out??
also, should i get anything else?
do you have any other tips?
i’m sure i’ll get the hang of it, but i want to be *completely* prepared for the first couple weeks of diapering at least…

also, do you think it’s a good idea to cut cotton flannel “liners” that can be thrown away–to use the first week or so with meconium? or should i just use disposables during that time? or…?

If I were you, I would order a dozen newborn prefolds and half a dozen Kissaluvs size 1. You’ll want a couple more covers, too. If you can afford a wool cover (or make one), they’re awesome. I really like Proraps for little babies. You’ll want a few Snappis to use with the prefolds.

I love my BumGenius pockets. They tend to stain, but some sunning will help.

For liners that can be re-used or washed, consider recycled fleece. Go to the thrift store and buy old polyester fleece jackets or blankets. Cut them into long skinny rectangles. You can use them as liners that can be washed with the diapers or thrown out. Meconium stains should come out of the fleece, but the cotton will stay stained for a long time.

For washing, I used to run a cold rinse with a tiny amount of detergent and some baking soda. I then ran a hot cycle or two with a little vinegar and maybe a few drops of essential oils. I hung up the laminated stuff (covers) and I tumble dried the absorbent stuff. If it’s nice out, I like to line dry diapers. It makes them smell nice.
